This page contains the links and instructions to guide through the Technology Petting Zoo--a hands on experience with moblie technology that will be coming to a Library near you!
This learning experience is designed for the below list of technology items to be distributed on 4 tables:
1. iPod Touchs
- plugs for charging
- ThumbTack microphones
2. MacBooks
3. Dell Min laptops
4. Flip cameras
5. Digital cameras
6. Wii with games and controllers etc
7. Inexpensive headphones
8. Pico pocket projectors
Normally this will be a 3 hour course with 40 minutes spent at each table with a 20 minute break between the second and third table attended. The technology tools will be dived this way:
Table 1 –
iTouch and MacBook
-
- download music and podcasts from iTunes onto MacBook and
- sync downloaded stuff with iTouch
- play music and podcasts
- record on iTouch with ThumbTack
- Download and play with Apps
Table 2 –
Flip camera and MacBook
- take videos on flip camera
- transfer videos to MacBook
- edit videos with iMovie on MacBook
Table 3 –
Digital camera and Dell mini laptop
- take pictures with digital camera
- upload pictures from digital camera to mini laptop
- access other pictures from web
- put pictures into Google Docs presenter
- use pocket pico
Table 4 –
MacBook
- use photo-booth to edit pictures
- use webcam to record
- use webcam for Skype
The group will be divided up into 4 groups of 5 each (this activities is designed for 20 participants). Each group will start at a table . After the 40 minute time is up, each group moves to the next higher numbered table until reaching table number 4 and then will go to table 1. Participants, be sure to share with others at your table your experiences. Now let us begin looking at the educationally appropriate activities you might be able to do at each table:
Table 1 –
iTouch and MacBook

- download music and podcasts from iTunes onto MacBook and
- sync downloaded stuff with iTouch
- play music and podcasts
- record on iTouch with ThumbTack
- Download and play with Apps
Need 5 MacBooks (with charging brick), 5 iTouchs (with 5 ThumbTacks, 5 charging cables, and connectors to MacBooks)
Each participant at the table could do any items in any order. But this is the suggested order:
First: Turn the MacBook on; open iTunes (login with your own login or use a Librarin provided generic login); find some free music and some free educational podcasts to download.
Second: Sync (plug) the iTouch to the MacBook; transfer the podcast and music to the iTouch; Use the earbuds provided or your own to listen to the podcasts and music.
Third: Use the iTouch to download podcasts and music directly from iTunes to the iTouch; listen to the results of your work.
Fourth: Plug the ThumbTack into the iTouch; record you evaluation of your expereince to this poinit; transfer the podcast you just created from the iTouch to the MacBook; edit the podcast in iMovie; Post the podcast ....
Fifth: Use the iTouch to download and play some Apps; click on the Apps button, search for educational apps, download the free ones you want to test, then play, play, play, or if you prefer, explore, explore, explore.
Table 2 –
Flip camera and MacBook
- take videos on flip camera
- transfer videos to MacBook
- edit videos with iMovie on MacBook
Need 5 Flip video cameras, 5 MacBooks (with 5 chaging bricks)
First: Each participant take a Flip camera and walk around the location and take interesting picture with commentary or using the sound available. If other inservice activities are going on, video tape some of them.
Second: Transfer the video(s) to the MacBook
Third: edit the video(s) with iMovie on the MacBook
Fourth: create background music with Garage Band on the MacBook and add it to your product
Fifth: Share and post your product
Table 3 –
Digital camera and Dell mini laptop
- take pictures with digital camera
- upload pictures from digital camera to mini laptop
- access other pictures from web
- put pictures into Google Docs presenter
- use pocket pico
Need 5 digital cameras, 5 miniDell laptops (with 5 charging bricks), 5 Pico projectors (with batteries and chargers)
First: each participant will take a digital camera and walk around taking pictures that will eventually be made into a slide presentation.
Second: download the pictures to the Dell mini laptop.
Third: Using the Google Docs Presenter (because it is in the "cloud" and not on the hard drive) and the pictures from the camera, create a slide presentation. If you need otehr picture to round out your preswentation download them from Flickr Creative Commons.
Fourth: share the slide presentation on a white surface with the pico pocket projector.
Table 4 –
MacBook
- use photo-booth to edit pictures
- use webcam to record
- use webcam for Skype
Need 5 MacBooks (with 5 charging bricks)
First: Turn on the MacBook and using the help button turn on the built in webcam.
Second: Use PhotoBooth and built in webcam to take your picture and edit it in numerous fun and useful ways. Put yourself into another scene, etc...
Third: Use the built in webcam to record yourself. Put the recording into iMovie and edit it. You may want to evaluate the expereince until now.
Fourth: Using the instructions from Library2Play 2 11.5 More Things; Thing #3 Like Skype login to Skype and video conference with someone.
