I was very lucky that I was able to work with the I touches and apps this past summer. We downloaded a number of apps and worked with the students using different applications.

How to Install Application on an I Pod Touch

One application that immediately popped into my head was Facebook. I can see the students all using their Facebook application and working on a Facebook page. You could have a class Facebook page. Each student could be assigned a different point of view or persona. They could post comments back and forth in a discussion type format on the Facebook page. Then there would be a written copy of everyones work.

Likewise, because the internet is avaiable on I-touch - I could easily see students working together, researching and collaborating in a wiki on a project. They could be using the internet, a wiki, and an I touch app such as Google Earth to follow a person in history through the steps of their life, to watch butterflies migrate, to look at different types of land forms, and many other ideas.

Additionally, students could use the Weather channel app and the writing app on the I-touch to make a chart of different weather conditions in different areas of the United States. They could also follow the changes in temperature in different towns through out the day. They could then plot their information and see the diferences based on where that area is in the United States or world.

An immediate option is the Skype app. Students could talk and collaborate with a "Skype pal" in another classroom in another state or country.

There are also many brainteaser, puzzle type apps that help create a deeper mathematical understanding through "play." The Dictionary and Thesaurs app uses are evident. But, I think it would be fun when teaching the uses of a dictionary or thesaurs to use the app and I-touch rather than just the book form of each. Students would be drawn to the I-touch and might actually begin to use a dictionary or thesaurus more often.

Of course newspapers can be read on an I-touch app as well. This can make for interesting work on current events in a history class. These are just a few apps and activities that could be done in a library or in a classroom.

Okay...went to the Apple store and played with equipment. Basically learned that the easiest way to find any application is to go to Appshopper.com and then be VERY specific in what I'm looking for. Many classroom uses: Whiteboard is an interactive using multiple itouches with a "common" board...more than one student can work on the board at once. Most of what I found could be used with one or two people, not more: flashcards, iwritewordslite (connect 4, Tic-Tac-Toe, Dots...), numberline, name that state, kids combos, etc. I could see the students teaming up and quizzing each other using some of these aps. or individually using the itouch and quietly quizzing themselves. Also found an ap. for our Apple kids: iconverse-assistedcom (for help with autistic kids) and an ap. for music: stickboy piano! They all looked GREAT!

There are so many varied ways to use I Touch for teaching purposes. Using I Touch will be more interesting to the students and if available really the way to do classroom study and discovery.

Students can use the I Touch for dictionay and thesarus experience and will love the experience of learning through technology. Of course, this could be a fun game and will encourage students to use both of these fantastic writing tools when the need develops.

Social Studies students can view videos about different topics, take notes on the typing App, later students can e mail their comments to other students who have also seen the movie.

History students can use the google earth App to locate locations of battles, places where treaties have been signed or just locate important historic sites. They will also love locating the school or their own home.

If you have the I Touch students and teachers will gain from its' use.

Loading Apps to an I Touch

After doing this Thing, I'm fighting myself from going out and buying an I Touch. The $75 dollar monthly fee for an I Phone discourages me enough, but the I Touch is a one time buy, I think.

I think I'm interpreting the question correctly. It sounds like students will be able to use an I Touch in the library and I'm supposed to think of a list of things they could use it for, yes? I hope...

1. I saw the app that looks up books in libraries. Don't know if SBISD libraries are on there, but it would help students find books without having to walk back and forth to the computers.

2. Study Flashcards: Teachers could make these online and students could practice on the I Touch.

3. Open Culture: This app is for the Open Culture website. FREE educational videos and podcasts from all over the educational world, mostly universities. I looked at the site and it's good stuff.

4. Instant Interactive Math: This app is a tutorial for math. It tracks progress, has tests, and provides helpful hints for the one being tuted.

I went to a Technology Petting Zoo today at the Media Center. It was great being able to look at the technology, navigate, and actually use the tools myself. I say myself...but we actually worked in groups to look at the different items, including MacBooks, flip camera phones, and the itouch. Working in groups made the tasks so much more stimulating. We were able to bounce off of each other in our discoveries. When using the Itouch, Shirley, the librarian, and I kept saying, "ooooh, look what I found!" With our co-exploring we found so much more than doing this alone. This made me think of my students. Sure they could sit down and enjoy the educational benefits of this technology and grow all on their own. But working with others causes us to grow in our zone of proximal development. By listening to her, I widened my base of knowledge to include so many other downloads, than what I could have done by myself. Problem solving also goes to a new level with a peer. As we used the itouch, there were several blunders made by she and I. We would help each other out of them, and keep going with the technology. As far as downloads, my favorites were the information and quizzes on the presidents, and the Barnes and Noble reader. I can't wait to watch my students experiment with all of these cool and exciting tools for technology.

Pretty cool phone! I have an Eternity touch phone, but it doesn't compare to the possibilities this one has. There were lots of neat apps to play around with, but all at a cost...that I would prefer not to spend! I could see how kids could really get into the different features and spend a lot of time using the various applications. As far as using it in school for instructional purposes, I think there might be problems monitoring what the kids are navigating. If on their own they would use it to create calendars, set up reminders, do the math games and the reader apps; it would have lots of educational potential.

Because we use a different cell phone provider and don't have an iTouch at home, this Thing was a bit more difficult. I did go to an Apple store and play with an iTouch, and they are very simple to use. However, the links on the Library2Play were quite helpful reading before testing the iTouch.

I did notice that any educational free apps were rather far down the list of the top 100, but I did like the fact that Paper Toss was #14! There are some great apps available that could be a huge benefit to students such as the calculators, the formula app (very cool), of course all of the maps, and my favorite, Classics, which had so many book titles available. Think how great that would be in an English class - a student could have access to more than one title, and not have to worry about hauling the book around.

In terms of group usage in the library, I could see the iTouch being used like an almost limitless "card catalog" by students almost anywhere and students could also work on projects/presentations in groups and have access to a huge variety of media and up-to-date information.

I think there are a wide variety of apps that could benefit all of our students, but like everything else, teachers and parents still have to make sure that students are on task, and making the best use of a great tool.

I had fun with this 'thing.' I personally do not own an iPhone or an iTouch (too attached to my BlackBerry), but I recently helped my parents purchase one.

I borrowed their phone and found a couple of apps I felt appropriate...namely Google Earth. It was amazing to search with the phone as opposed to my computer. I also accessed a couple of my class wikis to see what the interface would look like...awesome! It took me a couple minutes to get the hang of how to use a smaller space to edit; however, I found it invigorating to complete edits in this different interface.

I scanned so many apps...I can see a number of uses for the iTouch in our Resource Center. I'm a computer geek in a computer lab, though, so I wanted to see what librarians and others thought about the possibilities. I surfed through the 'Beachcombers' and 'Certifed Divers' (those participating in this online PD) and found one post particularly interesting. I believe this blogger is a Spring Branch librarian...anyway I love the ideas presented there and agree with them...

What would be ideal; however, would be to get an iTouch in the hands of all students. They would have instant access to any/all school information including news/announcements, athletic schedules, testing information...they could download podcasts/vidcasts of lessons, share student generated work...the list goes on...wonder if we could write a grant for something like that? Things that make you go hhhmmmm....

Boy, this was a challenge for me. I decided to wait until my son came into town so I could play with his iphone without the Apple guys breathing down my neck. He already had a plethera of apps downloaded so I really got a little bogged down in his toys first. LOL I did manage to download a free wikipedia app for his phone - it was very easy to do and I was surprised he didn't already have it downloaded. I have an apple itunes account because I bought my daughter a mac online a year ago - I just hadn't used it for anything else so now I'm hooked up. I want to visit with some other librarians to find out the best course of action in reference to downloading on the itouch(es) we're getting. I imagine most kids will have their own account but I want to have a general account ready. Maybe something easy to remember.

I am fortunate to have an iphone and did upload some of the educational apps mentioned. The astronomy one is quite good and will help enrich our third grade Greek heroes unit. My daughter prefers the Lemonstand game, she compares it to some of the SIMS games that are so popular.

I was excited to learn that there exist a cable that can connect the iphone to the computer screen or projector. Even if it only can do pictures and videos, I still feel the possibilities are worth exploring.

Use pictures and videos to share and document assignments that are not pencil and paper.

Use picture taken to insert into powerpoints to illustrate how-tos etc...

I plan to trying sharing a book over the docking station I have in the room.

I worry that what is so cool about many of the apps is controlling through the touch screen and that will be lost in a group of children if it becomes too large.

The I-Touch is a really cool device and expensive so I don't have one. I have two i-pods and 40GB and a 4GB Nano so I am familiar with some of the features. I see the nano, I-pod or the I-touch being used in several ways in the library and the classroom.

1. The book reading feature is idea for the library I think. Even though it's another way for this generation to become even more lazy (If that's possible) it can help some non-readers become more interested in reading.

2. I am terrible at math so I know the calculator would help students that think like I do. It looks great and it make graphing, algebra and other mathematics look interesting. I think this is on of the better tool found in i-touch.

3. I love the calendar and assignment portion of and phone, PDA or electronic devise, and with out it I would remember anything. The i-touch memory device is idea for students. I speaks their language and it looks like their world.

4. Having access to email and the Internet on a portable device is the best invention since the laptop. This allows to you take care of things at anytime (that could be good or bad). It is also great for on the spot fact finding and it could be used for study support.

5. I also saw ways that the i-touch could be used with ActivBoards, cooooool!

6. There are many other apps that students and teachers can use in the library and the classroom that will support all subjects.

I have a Blackberry, so I had to phone a friend for this one. Using the iphone we crusied available downloads. Obviously twitter is a feature that can be used, but wow, Google Earth and math games? Very cool.

For more student use in the library I would be excited about Google Earth and Dexy, a neat way for kids to organize notes as they research. With all of this information available I can see writing a grant to get our foot in the technology door for these!

My district has also been blocked from editing wikipedia in the past. It's a shame because it is a great learning experience, all the better for us to create our own wikis with more security and accountability.

Since my husband is addicted to his I-Phone, I am fairly familiar with what an I-Phone can do with the various apps he he frequently showing me.

What I've learned over the last week or so of playing around with this project is some of the things that other educators are doing with I-phones/I-touches. I still think that the management of these will be somewhat challenging, but I am less skeptical about their use in the education setting.

One of the most useful websites I discovered was the appism webstore so that you can search for I-touch apps on an actual computer. Just for fun I downloaded pictaslide since I always enjoyed sliding the little boxes around to complete a picture. On John's I-Phone is several ed apps that our kids already use, like the math flash cards that my daughter loves to use to "play" at learning addition/subtraction facts, and my son will use to work on multiplication facts.

Since my son is enrolled at Cornerstone this year and his teacher is one that is getting new I-touches for their class (among other things), it will be interesting to see what/how his class is using and managing them.

I've read several of the articles and watched the I-School video that was really exciting. I really liked the articles, 100 Ways to Use Your iPod to Learn and Study Better, and the ACU ConnectED Summit 2009, as well as Chris Webb'space article Why an iPod Touch in education? I'm looking forward to using these cool devices in helping students learn.

Ok, to begin... iTouch Applications... I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE my iPhone. I recently upgraded to the 3G from the Gen 1 phone, and it's been an awesome experience in speed acceleration for only $100 bucks or so. However, I hadn't thought a great deal about how to use the iTouch with students until this past Spring. I still think I'm a bit fuzzy on the overall value vs. the potential for loss, breakage, screen crack, stress to "sync" when only 1 computer is allowed to "own" the iTouch. Those "cons" said, though... the iTouch is an amazing piece of technology and it is SO intuitive.

My 2 1/2-year old nephew can work his parents' Applications on their iPhones. It's incredible!! I know that students will love to play the math facts application, the states/capitals application, and even will enjoy some of the music apps and the games (Labrynth, PacMan, Falling Gems) if they were gifted a few free minutes. It's super easy to find and DL an app, although within the app search, there are some questionable applications for young people to use, so application DLing would need to be strictly monitored, for sure.

Ways for multiple users to spend time on the iPhone?

* Work in a small group together to select, download, and take turns working in an app

* Have 1 student do the browsing, 1 student do the typing, 1 student do the application searching, etc.

* Time limits for each student to explore so that all students are given an opportunity

* Each month a different group of students is allowed to use the iTouches for projects/products

I really look forward to seeing how these can be used in the library and classroom setting!

I went to the Apple store to learn about this product. Thankfully they were very helpful.

Two that I found that could work in a group setting were Toddlers Flashcards and Preschool Adventures. Our school is getting more and more ESOL students from foreign countries. This would be a great way to introduce some of the vocabulary they would need for reading. You could have them show it to you or read what they find. Both apps would allow a great medium for kids to learn something basic. Also the books section might have easy readers. Shared reading could take on a new look-cool!!!!

I don't have an iPhone, so this thing was little hard for me to do on my own. I went to my friend's house today, so I can use and see the special features of her iPhone. Her phone was already loaded with stuff, she uses her phone for everything: emails, music, stories, pictures, games, GPS etc. She had so many pictures and video clips stored on her iPhone. I like the feature that when you rotate the phone, the picture rotates by itself.

I did not download any stuff on her phone, but she showed me how it can be done. My kids are after me to buy an iPhone, if T-mobile comes up with something like that, I am definitely going to get one.

I like the multitasking feature, where you can make a phone call while emailing a photo or surfing the web over a Wi-Fi or 3G connection.

Students are definitely going to enjoy using the iTouch in classroom or library, they already know more things to do in there than us.

Loving my MAC as I do, I was prepared to enjoy my experience with an I-Phone and/or I-touch. And I did, with one exception.

I seriously thought about trading in my Blackberry for an I-phone when my contract ended this month, but after spending time with my daughter's I-phone a couple of weeks ago, I am unsure that would be a good move. I don't do well with the keyboard! I also had an opportunity to see an I-phone sync with my car and it wasn't as successful as my Blackberry.

So I think for me personally, I will invest in a I-touch so I can continue to play around with and learn about the various apps. There are so many interesting things to choose. I did work with the gps while in Dallas and that was pretty cool. I do like the ones like the level and all the math flash cards. And the various map apps were fun too.

I got to see lots of elementary PBL students using the I-touches during their summer session and am firmly convinced that the kids will take hold of these and find uses that we can't even imagine. We need to give them ample opportunity to experiment with them.

Too bad I wasn't on this LibraryThing when Josh and his iPhone were visiting us in July! The number of cool, free Apps that are education-usable seems to grow daily.

Wouldn't it be fun to load the iLevel app, then have students guesstimate the angles of objects (whether it was level or not), then verify their observations with the iPhone? (Always looking for ways that the library can support the math department!)

I did find out that the easiest way to search for applications is through the site: appshopper.com

Since I didn't own the iTouch I couldn't download the application but through appshopper it shows you more screens from the application and gives more details.

I found tons of useful applications. It was difficult to find applications that could be used by more than 2 users.

I could see students pairing up to use the flashcard applications, iwrite word slate, name that state, etc. and quizzing each other. Some of the applications were interactive through bluetooth technology which allowed several users to be connected and work together. The possiblilies are endless!

An apple by any other name....

I do not own any Apple products so I'm posting this out of order (last) because I wanted to go to the mall and have someone at the Apple store show me the hardware. Before I looked into this my immediate reaction was to be doubtful regarding its uses but the more I think about it the more applications I can imagine. Everything looked extremely easy as far as downloading applications. If it was going to be used in a library or classroom I think it would be better to have several I-Touches instead of I-Phones because, as long as there is wifi available you can have unlimited internet access, whereas with the I-Phone you have to pay a monthly account & media fee. I did not know this. Now I want an I-Touch! Also, if I understood correctly from the Apple staff, you can pay for one application download on your computer and then install it on an unlimited number of devices.

Possible Classroom Applications:

A classroom set of I-Touch would work GREAT as the warm-up math activity at the beginning of each class. What a way to get instant, actively-involved students. OK, where's the grant I can apply for?????

Use a group (4) of I-Touch as a Math Center where everyone is using the same application or practicing math when other work is finished. Lots of incentive to be able to listen to music AND do math!

Download presentations and videos made by students to be shared with other students

Send messages to participants of a flat classroom project

Use them as an in-classroom research center that doesn't have to be plugged into the wall (takes up much less room!)

Use to take and post pictures on another site for science walks and class projects
